VP-8 Audio Processor |
| |
|
The Vorsis VP-8 audio processor pushes the cost/performance envelope
once again with the release of Version 3.x software. When it was introduced
to the broadcast industry the VP-8 was the first multi-mode
audio processor product equipped with six highly specialized
processing functions. Now, with the addition of new and powerful enhancements
the popular VP-8 becomes VP-8 Plus.
Special processing algorithms designed by Vorsis condition the audio
appropriately for the special needs of each of the six operating modes. Audio
is first pre-processed by a phase-linear four band AGC followed by an eight band
multi-band limiter equipped with specialized mode-specific final processing.
The unique final processing algorithms for each mode were carefully designed
to meet the special requirements of the intended audio transport mediums.
Changing the VP-8 to a new operating mode is as simple as selecting the new mode
from the front panel or from within the Windows®-based Graphical User Interface.
No reboot or ‘memory bank selection’ is required to change a mode and
mode changes occur in less than 2 seconds.

Six
Specialized Processing Modes
The VP-8 incorporates six highly specialized, built-in processing modes that
may be changed at any time by the user.
Whether it’s FM-HD with its near-CD quality audio or a very low bitrate voice
codec operating in mono, the VP-8 offers the best listening experience
of any audio processor in its price range. The VP-8’s built-in library of
algorithms specifically addresses the special needs of FM, AM, FM-HD, and AM-HD,
as well as High and Low bitrate codec applications.
Vorsis Bass
Management System
A Vorsis innovation, the Vorsis Bass Management System (VBMS) circumvents
bass-related distortion often plaguing audio processors. By monitoring
program energy in different parts of the audio spectrum and manipulating
the behavior of the final peak limiter, bass-induced intermodulation
distortion is prevented. The result is improved bass impact and detail
without affecting the clarity of mid and high frequency program — in fact
bass detail and the clarity of higher frequency audio are actually
enhanced by the VBMS algorithm.
Smart
Stereo Enhancement
Vorsis stereo enhancement incorporates a new technology that we call Smart
Stereo Enhancement. Operating in the sum and difference domain and under
the management of specialized automatic level and spectral
management algorithms, the resulting stereo image is wide and acoustically
stable with no ‘hole in the middle’ effect. Producing a sound
that has great depth of detail and is exciting to listen to, artistically
important nuances in music can be revealed for the very first time. In fact,
Vorsis customers have reported hearing details in program material that were
completely inaudible when the same material was processed by other brands
of audio processing.

The VP-8
is
the industry’s first true multi-mode audio processor with six
distinct and unique operating modes tailored for the specific
requirements of FM, AM, FM-HD, AM-HD, and high and low bitrate MP3 and
AAC codecs. All operating modes benefit from the Vorsis-designed
four-band AGC/compressor, four-band fully Parametric Equalizer, Vorsis
Bass Management System (VBMS), and
preset selection. In each of the six modes the 8 band limiter and
associated algorithms that follow the four band AGC are specifically
designed for the operating mode that has been selected. Twenty five
specially tuned Factory presets are included with each VP-8.
The VP-8 has analog
line level and
digital AES3 inputs, simultaneous analog and digital outputs.
The VP-8 offers the security of only a few front panel controls; most
setup and operating adjustments are made using an Ethernet connection
and the included Windows based Graphical User Interface software.
The VP-8 FM mode
includes sophisticated FM limiting/clipping
algorithms and high quality Stereo Generator.
The VP-8 AM mode
includes sophisticated AM limiting/clipping
algorithms and selectable bandwidth low pass filters.
The VP-8 FM-HD, AM-HD,
MP3/AAC>48k, and MP3/AAC<48k modes
are specialized “Codec” modes specifically tuned to
make best use of the characteristics of the Codec associated with the
name of the mode. Final limiting is accomplished by a precision
look-ahead limiter and low pass filters are available to further tailor
the audio for the specific code and its bit rate.
